IN IOWA & ILLINOIS
Transformations in 5 days or less.
Your kitchen is the heart of your home, and updating it is one of the smartest investments you can make. A well-planned cabinet refacing project will add significant resale value to your home and help you love your kitchen again.
Planning Your Kitchen Remodel Budget
Setting a realistic budget involves more than just deciding what you can spend right now. Cabinet refacing is much less expensive than a full remodel but is by no means a “cheap solution”.
Here’s what to consider:
- Average Costs: Most of our refacing projects land between $12,000 - $25,000
- Additional Upgrades: Adding countertops, backsplash, new drawer boxes, and under cabinet lights are additional options you have. Projects including all these typically range from $35,000 - $45,000
- Scope Determines Investment: The extent of your project significantly impacts the cost. If you like your countertops & backsplash there is no need to replace them - saving you a significant amount of money.
Where Your Cabinet Refacing Dollars Go
This is where the majority of your budget goes on a typical refacing project. The vast majority goes towards the new new products installed in your kitchen. The remainder goes towards labor and logistics items such as a dumpster, floor protection, etc.
- Doors, Drawer Fronts, & Refacing Stock: 65%
- Installation Labor: 25%
- Logistics (Dumpster, floor protection, etc): 10%
Factors That Influence Your Final Cost
Beyond basic materials and labor, several important factors affect your total investment:
- Number of Doors and Drawer Fronts: More doors means more materials have to be manufactured.
- Extra Cabinets: Occasionally, a cabinet or two may need replaced or added (such as a small island).
- Bonus Features: New drawer boxes with soft close glides, organizers such as roll trays and trash pullouts will influence the final cost
- Countertops & Backsplash: While not required - if you plan on replacing your countertops & backsplash this will add to the overall cost
- Flat Panel vs Raised Panel Doors: Raised panel doors feature a thicker middle section that helps prevent bowing/warping and makes the doors feel more solid but costs more than a flat panel door
Red Flags For Cabinet Refacing Projects
It might be tempting to go with the cheapest cabinet refacing bid, but be cautious of these red flags:
- Compromising on Quality: One of the most common practices is to sell Rigid Thermafoil Doors as solid hardwood. Most homeowners can't tell the different but RTF doors are prone to delamination and often fail within 5 years.
- A Different Method: Some places will sell "re-dooring" as refacing. While we still do re-dooring it's not the same as refacing. Re-dooring is just that: new doors and drawer fronts, paint the boxes. This is a cheaper method than refacing, which involves adding refacing stock to the cabinet boxes.
- Allowance Pricing: Contractors often use "allowance" pricing to artificially lower what you see as the project cost. You may sign a contract that say ok you have an allowance of $5,000 for new countertops. But you find out that you can only get laminate tops in that budget. Guess who has to cover the extra $4k to upgrade to quartz - You.
